Attempts to Create World Peace

1945- The United Nations was created

- replacement for the League of Nations

- international organization for settling disputes

- Security Council: US, Great Britain, France, Soviet Union, China: have the most say in the organization

- General Assembly- each member nation sends a representative

- intended to prevent another WWII

- has not created world peace

 

The Nuremberg Trials

- surviving Nazis were put on trial by the Allies after WWII- usually found guilty and executed

- charged with war crimes- provoking a war, the Holocaust

- established an example for dealing with aggressor countries

 

The UN was flawed from the beginning

- power struggle developed between Communist nations and the western Allied powers
